Defra has launched an online calculator which will help retailers and distributors to check whether they have obligations under the 2009 Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations which come into force on 1 February.
The obligations, which apply once a retailer/distributor supplies 32kg or more of portable batteries to end-users (consumers or businesses) annually, include:
· offering take-back facilities for waste portable batteries, free of charge to the public
- providing end-users with information about the take-back facility (e.g. at the sales point)
- accepting all types of waste portable battery – not just the ones they sell.
Defra also provides guidance notes on the Regulations and on storage and transport of collected batteries, as well as a leaflet for distributors. It points out that retailers and distributors below the obligation limit can still provide take-back facilities if they wish to. |
